New findings suggest CBD has potential antibiotic properties
A new study carried out by researchers at an Australian university has revealed that cannabis extracts may be able to kill harmful bacterias, specifically those found in instances of meningitis, legionnaires, and gonorrhoea. The studies undertaken at the University of Queensland’s Department of Molecular Bioscience are a big step forward in the medical application of CBD extracts. This is the first time that cannabinoids have been successfully used to kill particular gram-negative bacteria.
Researchers will continue to further their understanding of these new findings with the aim of gaining approval for the future use of CBD as an antibiotic and antimicrobial. Trials are set to begin in collaboration with Botanic Pharmaceuticals who have created a topical formulation to test the effectiveness in a clinical setting. If the study is successfully approved, this latest compound of CBD would be the first new antibiotic of its type in nearly sixty years. However, it’s important to retain an element of perspective on the findings, as indicated by Dr Blaskvich, associate professor at the Australian University research facility who predicts that it could still be between 10 and 15 years before CBD is being utilised as a widespread antibiotic.
